Although Buddy is never referred to by his last name in The Seven-Ups, most sources agree that it is the same character as that in The French Connection. The Seven-Ups was also based on Grosso’s experiences as a police detective. Jerry Greenberg’s onscreen credit reads: “Associate producer and Supervising film editor.” A Nov 1972 LAHExam item noted that Roy Scheider, cast in the lead role of The Seven-Ups, had portrayed “Buddy ‘Cloudy’ Russo” in Twentieth-Century Fox’s 1971 production The French Connection, which was based on the true-life experiences of New York police detective Salvatore “Sonny” Grosso. An HR news item stated that Canadian television writer Phillip Hersh was set to write the screenplay for The Seven-Ups, but his contribution to the completed film, if any, has not been determined.
